What Is a Word Counter?

Short answer
A word counter is a tool that counts the words and characters in your text. This one counts as you type and also shows sentences, paragraphs, reading time, speaking time, a readability score and your most used words.

Word limits are everywhere: essays, blog posts, meta titles, social posts and job applications. A word counter tells you at a glance if you are on target. This one also helps you write better, by showing how easy your text is to read, which sentences are too long and which words you repeat. Everything runs in your browser, so your text stays private.

How the Word Counter Works

Here is how every number is worked out.
  1. 01

Text is read as you type

Nothing is sent to a server. All counting happens in your browser.

    In your browser
  2. 02

    Words are counted

A word is a run of letters or numbers. Contractions like don't count as one word, and hyphenated words like e-mail count as two.

    In your browser
  3. 03

    Sentences and paragraphs

Sentences end at . ! or ?, and paragraphs are split by blank lines.

    In your browser
  4. 04

    Time is worked out

    Reading time = words ÷ 238. Speaking time = words ÷ 150.

    Readability is scored

The Flesch reading ease formula uses words per sentence and syllables per word.

The Formulas

Open formulas, so you can check the numbers.

Reading time = words ÷ 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed found in a large 2019 study of adult readers.

Speaking time = words ÷ 150 words per minute, a typical speaking pace.

Flesch reading ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words).

Is the Word Counter Accurate?

Yes. Word and character counts are exact for the rules shown, and reading time and readability use standard, published formulas. Syllables are counted with rules, so readability is a close estimate.

Accuracy in plain words

Different tools can count a little differently. For example, some count “e-mail” as one word. We count it as two, because each part is a word. Syllable counts are rule-based, so readability may differ slightly from other tools.

Keep in mind
Word count is a guide. Write as much as the topic needs to fully answer the reader.
