What is a robots.txt file?

A robots.txt file is a small text file at the root of your site, like yourbrand.com/robots.txt. Search engine and AI bots read it before they crawl, to see which parts of your site they may visit.

It controls crawling, not indexing. A blocked page can still show in Google if other sites link to it. To keep a page out of search results, use a noindex tag and leave the page crawlable.

Common robots.txt mistakes

  • Leaving Disallow: / from a staging site on the live site.
  • Blocking CSS and JS files, so Google cannot render your pages.
  • Using Disallow to remove pages from Google. Use noindex instead.
  • Forgetting the sitemap line, or using a relative sitemap URL.
  • Giving Googlebot its own group and forgetting that it then skips the general rules.

Robots.txt FAQ

Does robots.txt remove a page from Google?

No. Robots.txt only stops crawling. If other pages link to a blocked URL, Google can still list it without a description. To remove a page, add a noindex tag, password protect it, or delete it.

Should I block GPTBot and other AI bots?

It depends on your goals. Training bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot collect content to train AI models. Search bots like OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot decide whether you can be cited in AI answers. Many sites block training bots and allow search bots.

Where do I put robots.txt on WordPress?

WordPress creates a virtual robots.txt for you. Edit it with Rank Math or Yoast, or upload a real robots.txt file to your root folder, which takes priority over the virtual one.

What is the difference between Disallow and noindex?

Disallow (in robots.txt) tells bots not to crawl a URL. Noindex (a meta tag or HTTP header) tells search engines not to show a page in results. Google must be able to crawl a page to see its noindex tag, so do not use both on the same page.

Does Google follow Crawl-delay?

No. Google ignores Crawl-delay. Bing and Yandex respect it. If Google crawls too much, the crawl rate adjusts automatically based on how fast your server responds.

How big can a robots.txt file be?

Google reads the first 500 KB of the file and ignores the rest. Most sites need far less than 1 KB.

What Is a Robots.txt Generator?

Short answer
A robots.txt generator is a tool that writes the robots.txt file for your website. This file tells search engine and AI crawlers which pages they may visit. You choose what to allow or block, and the generator writes the rules in the correct format, ready to upload to your site root.

A small mistake in robots.txt can block Google from your whole site. The generator avoids this by building rules from tested presets, checking for common problems and letting you test any URL before the file goes live. It also makes it easy to decide which AI crawlers, like GPTBot or Google-Extended, can use your content.

How to Use the Robots.txt Generator

Make your robots.txt file in five simple steps.
01

Pick a preset

Start with Allow everything, WordPress, Shopify or another preset. You can also paste your current file.
02

Add your sitemap

Enter your website URL and click auto fill to add your sitemap line.
03

Choose your AI crawler rules

Allow all AI, block AI training only, or block all AI crawlers.
04

Add custom rules

In Advanced mode, add rules for a single bot, block folders or set a crawl delay.
05

Test and download

Test a few URLs, fix any warnings, then copy or download the file.

Where robots.txt must go

  • Upload it to the root of your domain: https://example.com/robots.txt.
  • Each subdomain needs its own file.
  • The file name must be lowercase: robots.txt.
  • Google reads only the first 500 KB of the file.

Important: robots.txt stops crawling, not indexing. To keep a page out of Google, use a noindex tag instead.

Robots.txt Rules Explained

The main lines you will see in a robots.txt file.
LineExampleWhat it does
User-agentUser-agent: *Says which crawler the rules below are for. * means all crawlers.
DisallowDisallow: /wp-admin/Blocks crawling of a path
AllowAllow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpAllows a path inside a blocked folder
SitemapSitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xmlTells crawlers where your sitemap is
Crawl-delayCrawl-delay: 10Asks bots to slow down. Bing and Yandex use it. Google ignores it.
* and $Disallow: /*.pdf$* matches any text, $ marks the end of the URL
When Allow and Disallow both match a URL, Google follows the longest, most specific rule.

How the Robots.txt Generator Works

Here is how the generator builds a safe robots.txt file.
  1. 01

    You pick a preset

Each preset is a tested set of rules for that platform, like WordPress or Shopify.

    In your browser
  2. 02

    Bot groups are built

Rules are grouped by user-agent, including a separate group for each AI crawler you block.

    In your browser
  3. 03

    A health check runs

The tool flags risky rules, like blocking the whole site, blocking CSS and JS, or a missing sitemap.

    In your browser
  4. 04

    URLs are tested

The tester applies Google's matching rules to show if a URL is allowed or blocked, and which line decided it.

    In your browser
  5. 05

    The file is written

Clean, commented rules you can copy or download as robots.txt.

    In your browser
  • Crawlers use the most specific User-agent group that matches them, or * if none does.
  • Paths are case sensitive. /Photos/ and /photos/ are different.
  • The longest matching rule wins. If an Allow and a Disallow rule are the same length, Allow wins.
  • * matches any characters and $ matches the end of the URL.

How Matching Works

The tester uses the same logic Google describes in its documentation.
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

Is the Robots.txt Generator Accurate?

Yes. The generator writes rules in the format set by RFC 9309 and Google, and the URL tester uses Google’s matching logic, so you can check the result before you upload.

Accuracy in plain words

The file and the tester follow Google’s published rules. Other crawlers may read some lines differently. For example, Bing uses Crawl-delay and Google does not. AI companies can also add new crawler names, which we review every month.

Keep in mind
Robots.txt is a request, not a lock. Good crawlers follow it, but bad bots may ignore it. Never use robots.txt to hide private content.

Robots.txt Generator FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this tool.

What is a robots.txt file?

A robots.txt file is a plain text file at the root of your website. It tells search engine and AI crawlers which pages or folders they may crawl.

Is this robots.txt generator free?

Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up and no limits.

Where do I upload robots.txt?

Upload it to the root of your domain, so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Each subdomain needs its own file.

Does robots.txt stop a page from showing in Google?

No. It only stops crawling. Google can still index a blocked URL if other sites link to it. Use a noindex tag to keep a page out of search results.

How do I block AI crawlers with robots.txt?

Pick "Block AI training only" or "Block all AI" in the generator. It adds Disallow rules for bots like GPTBot, Google-Extended and ClaudeBot.

Does Google follow Crawl-delay?

No. Google ignores Crawl-delay. Bing and Yandex follow it.

What does Disallow: / mean?

It blocks the whole site for that crawler. Only use it on purpose, for example to block one AI bot, never under User-agent: * on a live site.
