What Is a Page Speed Test?

Short answer
A page speed test loads a web page in a controlled browser and measures how fast it shows content and becomes usable. This tool runs Google Lighthouse through the PageSpeed Insights API and gives you scores out of 100 for Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO, plus a list of fixes.

Slow pages lose visitors. People leave when a page takes too long to show, and speed is part of Google’s page experience signals. A lab test like this one is great for finding exactly what slows a page down, like large images or heavy scripts. Where Google has it, the tool also shows real-user data, so you can compare the lab test with what visitors feel.

Lab Data vs Field Data

Two kinds of speed data, both useful.

Lab data (Lighthouse) is one test in a fixed setup. It is great for finding causes and testing fixes, but scores can change a few points between runs.

Field data (Chrome UX Report) is what real visitors felt over 28 days. Google uses field data for its Core Web Vitals. Use our Core Web Vitals Checker for a full field data view.

Accuracy in plain words

Lighthouse scores can change by a few points from one run to the next because of network and server timing. Run the test 2 or 3 times and look at the trend, not one number.

Keep in mind
A score of 100 is not needed to rank. Aim for good Core Web Vitals and a fast experience for real users.
