What Is a Robots.txt Validator?

Short answer
A robots.txt validator is a tool that checks your robots.txt file for errors. It reads every line, flags typos, unknown rules and risky blocks, and shows how Google will read the file. A robots.txt tester also tells you if a single URL is allowed or blocked for a crawler.

Robots.txt mistakes are easy to make and hard to spot. A missing colon, a rule outside a User-agent group or one extra slash can block important pages from Google. This tool checks your file against Google’s published rules and RFC 9309, explains each problem in plain words and shows the exact line that blocks a URL.

How to Use the Robots.txt Validator

Check your file and test URLs in under a minute.
01

Load your file

Enter your domain and click “Fetch robots.txt”, or paste the file into the box.
02

Run the check

Click “Check robots.txt”. Problems are marked on each line.
03

Read the issues

Each issue explains what is wrong and how to fix it, from errors to small warnings.
04

Test a URL

Enter a URL and pick a crawler, such as Googlebot or GPTBot, to see if it is allowed.
05

Fix and re-check

Update your file, paste it again and check until it is clean.

Common robots.txt mistakes

  • Disallow: / under User-agent: * blocks your whole site.
  • Blocking CSS or JS stops Google from seeing your pages properly.
  • Rules before the first User-agent line are ignored by Google.
  • Noindex: in robots.txt does not work. Google stopped reading it in 2019.
  • Paths are case sensitive, so /Blog/ is not /blog/.

How the Robots.txt Validator Works

Here is how the validator reads your file, the same way Google does.
  1. 01

    The file is loaded

Your live file is fetched from your domain, or the text you paste is used as it is.

    Our server or your browser
  2. 02

    Each line is parsed

Lines are split into directive and value. Comments and blank lines are handled.

    In your browser
  3. 03

    Groups are built

Rules are grouped under their User-agent lines, just like Google does.

    In your browser
  4. 04

    Rules are checked

Each line is checked against Google's rules and RFC 9309, and graded as error, warning or info.

    In your browser
  5. 05

    URLs are tested

The tester picks the right group for the crawler and applies longest-match to show the deciding line.

    In your browser

Matching Rules Used by the Tester

The tester follows the matching logic in Google’s robots.txt documentation.
  • The crawler uses the most specific matching User-agent group. Other groups are ignored.
  • The longest matching path rule wins.
  • If an Allow and a Disallow rule have the same length, Allow wins.
  • * matches any characters, $ matches the end of the URL.
  • If no rule matches, the URL is allowed.

Is the Robots.txt Validator Accurate?

Yes. The validator checks every line against Google’s robots.txt rules and RFC 9309, and the tester uses Google’s published matching logic to decide if a URL is allowed.

Accuracy in plain words

The tool follows Google’s rules. Other search engines and AI bots may read a few lines differently. The final word on Google is the robots.txt report in Google Search Console.

Keep in mind
A clean file only means the rules are correct. Make sure the rules also match what you want crawled.

Robots.txt Validator FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this tool.

What does a robots.txt validator do?

It checks your robots.txt file for errors and risky rules, and shows how Google reads it. A tester also tells you if a URL is allowed or blocked.

Is this robots.txt tester free?

Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up and no limits.

Can I test my live robots.txt?

Yes. Enter your domain and click "Fetch robots.txt" to load the live file, then run the check.

How do I check if Googlebot is blocked?

Enter the URL in the tester, choose Googlebot and click Test. The tool shows if it is allowed or blocked and which line decided it.

Why does Google ignore some of my rules?

Google ignores rules outside a User-agent group, Noindex lines, Crawl-delay and anything after the first 500 KB of the file.

Does robots.txt affect rankings?

Not directly. But blocking important pages, CSS or JS can stop Google from crawling and understanding your site, which can hurt your search visibility.

How often should I check robots.txt?

Check it after every change, after a site move or redesign, and whenever pages drop out of Google.
