What Is a Meta Tag Checker?

Short answer
A meta tag checker is a tool that reads the meta tags in a page’s HTML and checks them for SEO problems. It shows your title, description, canonical, robots tag, social tags and more in one report, explains what each one does and tells you how to fix anything that is missing or wrong.

Meta tags are hidden from visitors but read by search engines and social networks. They decide how your page looks in Google, whether it can be indexed, which URL is the main version and what shows when someone shares your link. One wrong robots tag can remove a page from Google, so checking them is a key part of any SEO audit.

Key Rules the Checker Uses

Based on Google’s documentation and the Open Graph protocol.
  • A page should have one title, one meta description and one canonical tag. If there are several canonicals, Google may ignore them all.
  • noindex in the robots tag or X-Robots-Tag header keeps the page out of Google.
  • Titles over about 600 px and descriptions over about 920 px get cut off on desktop.
  • Open Graph images work best at 1200 x 630 px.

Accuracy in plain words

The tool reads the HTML the server sends. Tags added later by JavaScript may not show, and some sites send different HTML to bots. Google also may rewrite titles and descriptions in results.

Keep in mind
Correct tags help Google and social networks show your page well, but they do not guarantee rankings.

Meta Tags Analyzer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this tool.

What is a meta tag checker?

It is a tool that reads the meta tags in a page's HTML, like the title, description, canonical and robots tag, and checks them for SEO problems.

Is this meta tag checker free?

Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up.

Which meta tags matter most for SEO?

The title, meta description, robots tag and canonical tag matter most. Open Graph tags matter for social sharing.

Does Google use the meta keywords tag?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for many years. You do not need it.

Why is my page not in Google?

Check the robots tag first. A noindex value keeps it out of search. A canonical pointing to another URL can also stop it from showing.

How do I change my meta tags in WordPress?

Use an SEO plugin like Yoast or Rank Math. It adds fields for the title, description, canonical and social tags on each page.

Can I check a competitor's meta tags?

Yes. Enter any public URL to see all of its meta tags and previews.
