Check your meta description length in characters and pixels for desktop and mobile. See a Google preview, get a score and quick fixes, or check up to 200 descriptions at once.
Google cuts descriptions by pixel width, not by a fixed number of characters. Wide letters like W and M take more space than i or l, so two descriptions with the same length can be cut at different points. This checker measures the real pixel width with the same font size Google uses and shows exactly where your text would be cut.
| Check | Limit | What happens over it |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop width | About 920 pixels | Text is cut with “…” |
| Mobile width | About 680 pixels | Text is cut sooner on phones |
| Characters | Aim for 120 to 160 | Too short: Google may write its own |
| Double quotes | Avoid ” inside the tag | Can end the HTML attribute early |
Your description, title and URL are read as you type.
In your browserThe text is drawn with Google's snippet font (Arial at 14 px) and its width is measured.
In your browserThe width is compared with about 920 px for desktop and 680 px for mobile to find where it would be cut.
In your browserLength, keyword use, call to action, ending and quotes are checked.
In your browserEach check adds to a score, with a fix for each one that fails.
In your browserEach letter has a different width. At 14 px Arial, a “W” is about 13 pixels wide, while an “i” is about 3. So 155 characters of wide letters can be cut, while 170 narrow characters may fit.
The checker uses the browser’s own text measuring tool to get the real width of your exact text, then compares it with the desktop and mobile limits.
We compare our preview with real Google results every month. Google sometimes shows longer snippets for some searches, and it may rewrite descriptions, so treat the preview as a close guide.
