What Is IndexNow?

Short answer
IndexNow is a free protocol that lets you tell search engines the moment a page is added, updated or deleted. Instead of waiting for a crawler to find the change, you send the URL yourself. Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep use IndexNow, and one submit is shared with all of them.

This IndexNow submitter does the whole job for you. It makes a key, gives you the key file to upload, checks that the file is live and sends your URLs in the right format. Google does not use IndexNow, so for Google you still rely on your sitemap and Search Console.

When to use IndexNow

  • You publish a new page or post.
  • You make a big update to an existing page.
  • You delete a page or change its URL.
  • You change prices or stock on product pages.

Only submit pages that really changed. Sending the same unchanged URLs again and again does not help.

IndexNow Rules We Follow

The submitter follows the official IndexNow protocol.
  • The key must be 8 to 128 characters: letters, numbers and dashes.
  • The key file must be a UTF-8 text file at your site root, named after the key, and contain only the key.
  • All URLs in one submit must belong to the same host as the key.
  • One request can hold up to 10,000 URLs.
  • A submit to one IndexNow search engine is shared with all the others.

Accuracy in plain words

A 200 or 202 answer means the URLs were received. It does not mean the pages are indexed yet. Each search engine decides when and if it crawls and indexes a page.

Keep in mind
IndexNow speeds up discovery, but it does not force indexing. Pages still need to be useful and crawlable to show in search.
