What Is a Keyword Opportunity Score?

Short answer
A keyword opportunity score is one number from 0 to 100 that shows how worth it a keyword is to target. It combines search demand, how hard it is to rank, how valuable the traffic is, the search intent, how well it fits your business and where you rank now.

Keyword tools give you volume and difficulty, but those numbers alone do not tell you what to do first. A big keyword can be too hard, and an easy one can bring the wrong visitors. This calculator weighs all the important factors in one open formula, so you can sort a long list and start with the keywords most likely to pay off.

How the Keyword Opportunity Score Works

Here is the exact formula behind every score.
  1. 01

    Demand (25 points)

    Volume on a log scale: log10(volume + 1) ÷ log10(100,001). 100,000 searches gets full points.

    In your browser
  2. 02

    Ease (30 points)

    (100 − KD) ÷ 100. A KD of 20 gets 80% of the points.

    In your browser
  3. 03

    Value (15 points)

    CPC on a log scale: log10(CPC × 10 + 1) ÷ log10(201). A $20 CPC gets full points.

    In your browser
  4. 04

    Intent and fit (15 + 15 points)

Set by your choices. Buying intent and a strong fit score highest.

    In your browser
  5. 05

    Adjustments

    KD 70+ is scaled down (× 0.85, or × 0.75 at KD 80+). Ranking 4 to 10 adds 10 points, 11 to 20 adds 6.

    In your browser

The Full Formula

Every score is worked out the same way.

Score = (25 × Demand + 30 × Ease + 15 × Value + 15 × Intent + 15 × Fit) × Hardness + Rank boost, rounded and kept between 0 and 100.

Example: 2,000 searches, KD 25, CPC $3, commercial intent and a strong fit, ranking #12. The keyword gets a solid base score plus a 6 point boost and is flagged as a quick win.

Keyword Opportunity Score FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this tool.

What is a keyword opportunity score?

It is a number from 0 to 100 that shows how worth it a keyword is to target, based on demand, difficulty, value, intent, fit and your current rank.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up.

Where do I get volume and difficulty?

From any keyword tool, like Ahrefs, Semrush or Google Keyword Planner. Use the same tool for your whole list.

What is a quick win keyword?

A keyword you already rank for on page 1 or 2 (position 4 to 20) with a difficulty of 50 or lower. A small push can move it up.

Why does ease have the biggest weight?

Because a keyword you cannot rank for brings no traffic, no matter how big it is.

Why is a high-volume keyword scored low?

Usually because it is very hard (KD 70+), has weak intent or does not fit your business.

Can I score many keywords at once?

Yes. Add as many keywords as you like and sort by score.
