What Is a URL Encoder and Decoder?

Short answer
A URL encoder turns characters that are not safe in a web address, like spaces and symbols, into percent codes such as %20. A URL decoder does the opposite and turns %20 back into a space. This tool does both, line by line, and also splits a URL into its parts.

URLs can only use a small set of characters. Spaces, accents, emojis and symbols like & or ? inside a value must be encoded, or the link can break or pass the wrong data. Decoding is useful when you need to read a messy tracking link or a URL from your logs. This tool also warns you when text was encoded twice, a common bug.

Quick facts

How to Use the URL Encoder / Decoder

Encode or decode in seconds.
01

Pick Encode or Decode

Choose what you want to do.
02

Choose the mode

Encode a value, like a search term, or a full URL.
03

Paste your text

Paste one or many lines.
04

Copy the result

The result updates as you type. Copy it in one click.
05

Clean a URL

Break a URL into parts and remove tracking codes.

Value or full URL?

  • Value mode encodes everything except letters, numbers and – _ . ~. Use it for a search term or a single query value.
  • Full URL mode keeps : / ? & = # so the URL still works. Use it for whole addresses.
  • Turn on “Spaces as +” for HTML form style query strings.

How the URL Encoder / Decoder Works

Here is how the encoder and decoder work.
  1. 01

    Text is split into lines

Each line is handled on its own, so you can work on many URLs at once.

    In your browser
  2. 02

    Text is encoded

Value mode uses encodeURIComponent and full URL mode uses encodeURI, the browser's standard functions.

    In your browser
  3. 03

    Text is decoded

Percent codes are turned back into characters with decodeURIComponent, using UTF-8.

    In your browser
  4. 04

    Double encoding is checked

If a decoded result still has % codes, the tool warns that it was probably encoded twice.

    In your browser
  5. 05

    URLs are cleaned

The URL is split into parts and tracking codes like utm_, fbclid and gclid can be removed.

    In your browser

The Encoding Rule

Based on RFC 3986, the URL standard.

Each unsafe character is turned into its UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as % plus two hex digits. For example, a space is one byte (20 in hex), so it becomes %20. The letter é is two bytes, so it becomes %C3%A9.

Accuracy in plain words

If text contains a broken percent code, like a % with no valid hex after it, it cannot be decoded. The tool tells you which line has the problem.

Keep in mind
Encode values, not whole URLs, when you build a link with query parameters.

URL Encoder / Decoder FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most about this tool.

What is URL encoding?

URL encoding turns characters that are not allowed in a URL into percent codes, like a space into %20.

Is this URL encoder free?

Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up, and it runs in your browser.

What does %20 mean?

%20 is the encoded form of a space.

What is the difference between %20 and +?

Both can mean a space. %20 works everywhere. + only means a space in query strings from HTML forms.

What is double encoding?

It happens when text is encoded twice, so % becomes %25. For example, %20 becomes %2520. The tool warns you when it finds this.

Should I encode a whole URL?

Use full URL mode for whole addresses. Use value mode for single parts, like a search term in a query string.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
